11 Oct 2009
WBC Asia Straw Weight Champion Pigmy Kokietgym had a tough assignment defending his ABCO title in Korat, Thailand on 5 October.
Philippines challenger Edwin Tumbaga almost snatched the title in a bloody 12 round points decision in which two judges awarded the contest 114 to 112 in favour of Pigmy and the other had it a 113 points draw.
Pigmy had two points deducted in rounds two and ten when he unintentionally cut Tumbaga in two separate clashes of heads as the fighters fought in the clinches.
The Thai champion established an early points lead in rounds two to five and managed to hold off his determined opponent for the rest of the fight.
Each time Pigmy put pressure on Tumbaga the Philippine came back with hard counter punches.
The standard of the contest was first class - the champion being fully tested with hard in-fighting and to win he had to match Tumbaga?s solid hit rate that was consistent and unrelenting.
Judges Montol Suriyachan and Chainat Hanwiset scored the championship 114 to 112 while Sinchai Rasamifuang scored a 113 draw.
