Xiong shines at WBC Asia Int'l Challenge in Kunming, China

China's outstanding flyweight contender Xiong Zhao Zhong is warming up for another WBC world title shot after scoring a third round KO victory against Thailand's Herrio Patakomgym in the main event of the WBC Asia International Challenge Series held in Kunming, China, on 24 January.
A packed crowd at the Expo Hotel venue saw Xiong display crisp timing and powerful punches to end the contest by KO after an entertaining opening to the contest that had the local boxing fans cheering.
The second International Challenge Series event was staged by China's premier boxing promoter Liu Gang and sanctioning by the Asian Boxing Council to showcase the development of professional boxing in China under the WBC umbrella. The first WBC Asia International Challenge held in Yinlee was presided over by Chang Jiangping, Director General of the general administration of boxing in China on 8 December last year.
Along with the fine performance of Xiong, who knocked down former world champion Daisuke Naito in the sixth round of Japanese's fifth title defence in Tokyo on May 26, 2009, the second WBC Asia International Challenge in Kunming saw China's Super Featherweight rising star Xia Yu Qin score a seventh round KO over courageous Japanese challenger Matsu Tomoya.
Two WBC Asia Youth Championships featuring Chinese boxers saw exciting rising star Zhi Dai Qing eclipse Bai Huang in an eight rounds points decision and Li Wen Yang outscore May Yi Jun.
